Time to Throw it Back
Happy Throwback Thursday neighbors! Where you come from, where you call home is a part of who you are. Welcome to the Live Like a Local blog series that explores our roots and hometown in Southern Orange County.
We welcome you to explore with us, as we take in the vibrant culture, beautiful histories and exquisite homes created in our own backyard. Whether it be San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, or a surrounding coastal community, it is always a great day for Throwback Thursday in Orange County!
San Clemente Ocean Festival
The “Beach Games,” The “Greatest Show on Surf” – the Ocean Festival is not only a San Clemente staple, but a celebration of our beach lifestyle which is so integral to Orange County. This nonprofit event grew from the Orange County Beach Games into the San Clemente Ocean Festival in 1976. At the hands of Sheridan Byerly, Marine Safety Captain for San Clemente Lifeguards, the dream was to increase community involvement in beach activities with a 3-day beach competition. And, 4 decades later that dream has come true.
The 2019 San Clemente Ocean Festival marks 43 years of locals coming together. Today, the event attracts nearly 50,000 people. And, the audience is far-reaching from Orange County to San Diego County, from Riverside County to San Bernardino County, and beyond. San Clemente – best known as “Surfer’s Paradise” and the “World’s Best Climate” – has always welcomed visitors from around the world. Most notably, the Ocean Festival attracts tourists and participants as far as Hawaii and Australia.
The countdown is on! The 43rd San Clemente Ocean Festival is almost here. A perfect announcement for a San Clemente Throwback Thursday! Happening July 20th & 21st, this year’s festival is a reminder of where it all started. It was publicist Dorothy Fuller, who nurtured the growth of this great event. Remembered as “The Mother of the Ocean Festival,” she was the one who coined the festival’s slogan (The Greatest Show on Surf – circa 1981) and trademarked the logo (King Neptune – circa 1983).
What makes San Clemente so special is that we started as something special, a beautiful city built by our founder Ole Hanson for a beautiful lifestyle by the beach. What makes the San Clemente Ocean Festival so special is that it too started as something special, an event run by a board of talented volunteer directors and hundreds of community volunteers. We hope to see you there this weekend to celebrate this special event!
