Your Guide to Fun Beach Activities

Fun at the beach with friends

Who doesn’t love going to the beach? It’s a summertime staple – and many people continue to go out of season. Other than swimming, check out all the fun activities you can do on the beach.

Spot dolphins or whales

Many beaches offer the chance to spot dolphins, depending on where you are. Alternatively, you can also go whale watching. In San Clemente, check the schedules of dolphin and whale watching tours. Make sure your phone is fully charged so you can immortalize special moments in photos and on video.

Take a stroll down the boardwalk

Most beaches have some kind of boardwalk or pier where you can enjoy arcade games, go on rides, eat delicious and totally fun food, or simply go on a leisurely stroll. Once again, check ahead of time to see what – if anything – is happening at the best surfing beaches near you.

Play Frisbee

Don’t underestimate this old-school favorite. Tossing a disc and having family, friends, or your pet dog catch it in mid-air can sometimes be all the fun you’ll ever need. Take things to the next level with Ultimate Frisbee and Frisbee Golf or just keep things simple.

Go fishing

Fishing is a great way to relax and unwind at the beach. Check out the kind of fish that swim in the waters of the area you’re in. Check, too, the fishing rules and restrictions. If you’re intent on casting your line, find out if there are bait shops in the area or related facilities. Go online and find out all you need to know ahead of time.

Catch up on your reading

Plant an umbrella on the sand and park yourself under it as you catch up on your reading. Crack open that book you promised you’d get to one day. Flip or swipe through a fun read. Finish the book that’s been languishing on your nightstand for weeks. Take advantage of the uninterrupted time before you head back to your hectic life.

Ride the waves

Hit up a surfing beach appropriate to your skill level. Or learn how to ride the waves by taking an hour or two of surf lessons. If you’re interested in other water activities then consider kite surfing, waterskiing, paddle boarding, or renting a jet ski.

Have a beach bonfire – if legal

If you’re headed to a California beach, there’s a good chance bonfires are still permitted. Bonfires are a California beach tradition, after all. Some beaches offer the use of fire pits for free on a first-come, first-served basis. It’s still a great way to spend a cool summer evening with the people you’re with.

Go beachcombing – but don’t bring home the items

Do you enjoy strolling down the beach and picking up seashells or interesting stones or pebbles to bring home with you? If you haven’t been beachcombing for a while in California, check the California Fish and Game regulations. You can’t pick up seashells with living mollusks or sand dollars, which are related to starfish or sea cucumbers. Again, check local laws to find out if it’s legal to collect pebbles, sea glass, and other items from the beach. Perhaps it’s just as fun to collect and inspect, and then leave the stuff you picked up back where they belong – on the beach.

Watch the sunset

Watching the sunset on the beach remains one of the few things that will make you pause from whatever it is you’re doing so you can gaze at the incredible sight. If you can get out of bed early enough, watching the sunrise can be an invigorating experience as well.

Build sandcastles

Building a sandcastle is among the best beach activities for kids, but adults can definitely join in the fun, too. From simple and easy designs to elaborate masterpieces, sandcastle sculpture is a good way to flex you and your kids’ creative muscles. Document the process and the finished product and share it on your social media accounts.
